Simple things in life February 12, 2007

I guess I finally gave in. I finally gave in to the temptation of penning down my thoughts and drag my lazy finger to dance upon the keyboard of my acer laptop.

What inspired me was truly, the simple things in life I see. Goodness. What emotions it fills me with.

It all began when I went for Home Visiting with the LEO Club that Saturday. We did the usual chinese new year singing of songs as well as teaching them how to fold lanterns and fishes.

I met an uncle called Hai Xiang ( or so I think his name is as he told me, in a muffled voice due to his absence of teeth and a common language). He was sitting in a corner desk, colouring.

Something I don’t associate with people that age. Rather, the reverse of it.

What amazes me was his commitment to fill in every speck of empty space in the drawing, colouring it with no hurry nor hesititation. With such, concentration. The pleasure was displayed on his face like an art piece for me to view. I sat there, staring at his crepe-like face for ten minutes.

I smiled so widely.

It got me thinking, will I ever spend time on that like him?

Maybe when I am older.

What a cycle life plays on us.

When we’re young, remember how the colouring pages seem to excite us? I guess that fades out pretty quicky after 2 years and is replaced by monotonous linear notes… Its so heartwarming to see an old man colour with such pleasure, as though he was young again, filling those empty spaces with smiles. How unpredictable.

Will I do that when I am his age?

Perhaps.

Maybe you too. For reasons we have yet to figure.
